HONOLUA BAY, Hawaii  - Tour rookie Jessi Miley-Dyer of Australia has defeated Keala Kennelly of Hawaii to win the final event on the 2006 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Billabong Pro Maui, in excellent four to six-foot surf in Honolua Bay on Sunday. Peru's Sofia Mulanovich won the $10,000 bonus Vans Triple Crown of Surfing title despite losing to Kennelly in the quarter finals of the Billabong Pro, and Australian Layne Beachley claimed her seventh world title after placing third in the event.

Miley-Dyer defeated Beachley in the semi-finals enroute to her final against Kennelly, held in barreling six-foot surf.  She has finished her rookie season at No. 4 in the world – the three surfers above her were all world title contenders: Beachley, Melanie Redman-Carr, and Chelsea Georgeson.

“I’m still tripping!” Miley-Dyer said. “I’m just so stoked to have been able to surf against Layne, she’s won seven world titles, so to surf against her and manage to get all the good waves in that heat and then make the final and get another chance to surf Honolua with one other girl out… well, it was just amazing.”

Miley-Dyer led the majority of the 30-minute affair, though Kennelly tucked into a tube that could have changed things with just seconds to go.

“KK had this amazing wave at the end; if she would have come out of that barrel she would have beat me for sure,” Miley-Dyer said. “I caught the wave behind it, turned around and my heart just dropped down to the floor thinking, ‘She just beat me in the last second of the heat.’ I don’t even know what to think, I’m just so excited.”

Miley-Dyer has had a banner year across in both the elite World Championship Tour and World Qualifying Series events.

“I’m really stoked,” Miley-Dyer said. “I started off the year really well winning the World Juniors and then when I wasn’t doing so well on the Women’s Championship Tour I decided to do the World Qualifying Series and somehow managed to win that series too. When Silvana [Lima] got injured, I jumped up to earn ‘Rookie of the Year,’ so winning the final event too… I’m pretty excited. I was just hoping to requalify so everything else is a bonus!”

Kennelly, who jumped from 14th to 8th on the ASP Women’s World Tour ratings with her Billabong Pro final showing was the in-form surfer of the event. The big barrels on offer at Honolua Bay were tailor-made to suit Kennelly’s kamikaze style.

“I was just inches away from a 10.00 and claiming the whole thing,” Kennelly said. “I was standing up to celebrate already so I got clipped in the head; I started celebrating too early but it’s cool if I was going to lose, I was going to lose trying to get a 10.00! I’m lucky I got that bomb that came right at the end and I was able to get into it, if I would have just come out of that thing it would have been amazing. I had an amazing event, what a great way to end the year!”

Though she qualified for the 2007 ASP Women’s World Tour, Kennelly has relinquished her position to pursue other endeavors.

“I’m going to be working on a television series on HBO,” Kennelly said. “I got a part as a season regular on a show called ‘John from Cincinnati.’ I think it’s going to amazing for me and amazing for women’s surfing to get a more mainstream audience interested in the sport. When I’m not doing HBO and not competing in select events, I’m going to be doing some adventure and vision stuff with Billabong, kind of a Shane Dorian type of thing, just flying around the world and surfing the best waves. That’s going to be way more my thing. I think when you put a time limit on me and I have the pressure of being judged, my best surfing doesn’t shine through. It’s going to be really good for me.”

Despite donning the world crown for the seventh time just an hour before, Beachley bowed out of the Billabong Pro Maui in the semis.

“The bubble burst in the semifinals,” Beachley said. “Once I found out that I was the champion, I could barely even concentrate in my quarter against Rebecca [Woods]. I was fortunate enough to pick up that first wave [for which she earned a 9.80], if I didn’t have that, I probably wouldn’t have won that heat.”

Beachley, who has clinched five of her seven world titles at the Billabong Pro Maui, has never won the event.

“Going out in the semi I was just a little bit too relaxed and just not focused enough,” Beachley said. “I was just really relieved that [the world title] was all over. It was just one of those heats where I was completely out of rhythm, but I chose the right heat to have that happen. I fell apart in the heat but I’m not beating myself up over it – I’m just grateful that I made it as far as I did and that I won the World Title. I am really proud of Jessie, but I thought Keala would have won this event for sure since she was surfing amazing for the entire contest. At least I lost the event to the winner.”

Also finishing equal 3rd and cementing her spot on the 2007 ASP Women’s World Tour with her best result of the season was Claire Bevilacqua (AUS). The second-year surfer was in jeopardy of not requalifying prior to her strong season-finale showing. She was beaten by Kennelly in the semis.

“I’m stoked on all the positive things that happened here, but I hate not surfing to my best ability and that’s what really hurt out there,” Bevilacqua said. “If I would have just taken it to KK the entire time, until the buzzer, I would have been happy to lose. It’s like someone stole my mojo.”

Sofia Mulanovich of Peru, who was world champion in 2004, can now add the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing title to her resume – and $10,000 to her bank account. Mulanovich won the first jewel in the Hawaiian big wave surfing series, the Op Pro at Haleiwa, finished seventh at the second, the Roxy Pro Sunset Beach, and clinched the Triple Crown title after her third place finish in Maui put her at the head of the class.

“I’m stoked, 10,000 bucks!” Mulanovich said. “It’s amazing – to win the Vans Triple Crown is one of the biggest honors ever – it’s amazing to win in Hawaii. I had so much fun at Haleiwa and so much fun at Sunset. Maui was amazing too, I got comboed but it was still fun.”

The ASP Women’s World Tour will take a three month break. Competition will resume in February on the Gold Coast of Australia.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News
, 6 December, 2006 : - - PIPELINE, Hawaii  – With the surfing world now firmly focused on the infamous North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, the excitement is expected to peak when the first round of the Foster’s ASP World Tour’s penultimate event – the Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters – kicks off on December 8.

The event, which is held at the notoriously dangerous yet incredibly perfect wave known as the Banzai Pipeline, is arguably the most watched on the 11-event tour.  And despite Kelly Slater (USA) having wrapped up his eighth world crown two events previous in Spain, the “Showdown For The Crown”, as it has been dubbed, is expected as always to serve up a smattering of only the most spectacular surfing action.

The Banzai Pipeline is an incredibly hollow wave, which breaks when deep-water swell converges with deadly shallow coral reefs. And for the surfer the experience is a complete rush as while they avoid being slammed into oblivion by pure Hawaiian power, they can ride deep inside some prolific barrels.

And while the focus will be on the best of the best on the Foster’s ASP World Tour much attention will be directed to the vast number of locals who will be taking part in the event with the draw being adjusted to accommodate 16 Pipe chargers – thus taking the standard 48 man lineup to a total of 64.

“This year the 45 surfers on the Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour will be joined by three Rip Curl wildcards and 16 Pipeline specialists in the Pipe Masters hunt,” said Rip Curl International’s Head Of Marketing Neil Ridgway. “The changing format in 2006 guarantees that the locals who surf the world’s deadliest wave day in day out [some of Hawaii’s finest] will be on show in the main event hoping to fulfill the dream of a life time – to become a Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Master!

“Only Pipeline offers such a unique scenario,” Ridgway continued. “You may be fighting for a world title or for points for requalification and not only do you need to beat the guys you surf against all year, but you now have the best Pipeline locals to contend with! It adds to the pressure, adds to the excitement and adds to the ‘Showdown for the Crown’.”

With the world crown already in the bag the race to claim the remaining four slots in surfing’s coveted Foster’s ASP World Tour top five is still raging and going into the Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters Australian hot shot Mick Fanning is edging just in front of former three-time world champion and defending event champion Andy Irons (HAW).

Fanning, who was a finalist in last year’s event, has been in tremendous form during the latter stages of the 2006 season and has claimed two event wins – one in South Africa and the most recent in Brazil less than four weeks ago.  Knowing that competition will be fierce Fanning is eager for to take the challenge head on.

“I wish the world title was still up for grabs!” said Fanning. “It’s still going to be a good battle going into Pipe though with second spot up for grabs and I know the guys under me are going to be gunning for a top result. It’s always a big event, so hopefully I can get a result there.”

“I’ve made two finals at Pipe now and have a fourth and a second, so hopefully the next one for me is that Pipe championship,” said Fanning. “It’s a huge contest that everyone wants to win, so hopefully I can get it.”

The immediate forecast for the North Shore of Oahu looks very promising indeed with a huge swell expected within the next 24 hours – just in time for the completion of the second of the three Vans Triple Crown Of Surfing events being staged at Sunset Beach tomorrow.

Rip Curl and ASP will be hosting a live webcast of the entire event, which will include action replays and commentary from some of the sports most notable characters.

Past Champions

December 1984
Californian Joey Buran achieves his lifelong dream of winning the Pipeline Masters. He does so in spectacular fashion emerging from a compact wedge of water to the hoots of disbelief from shore. Having achieved his ultimate goal, Joey retires to run a ministry in Vista California.

December 1985
Australian prodigy Marco Luciano Jay Occhilupo (aka Occy) wins the event in wild conditions. By winning the event he wins the approval of his  girlfriend’s father, who upon seeing his performance remarked: “Man, that kid’s got balls”.

December 1986
Michael Ho’s younger brother Derek wins the event – scoring a perfect 10 on a wave that many still describe as one of the best Pipe contest waves ever.

December 1987
World Champion Tom Carroll wins his first of three Pipe titles in the widest margin of points ever recorded.

December 1988
Like Larry Blair, fellow unknown Australian Robbie Page wins the event in small conditions. He then promptly drops off the competitive radar.

December 1989
Big brash newcomer, Australian Gary ‘Kong’ Elkerton wins the event on muscle alone. He also overcomes the Hawaiian mastery on home soil by winning the coveted Triple Crown title.

December 1990
Tom Carroll wins his second Masters.

December 1991
Tom Carroll, moments before the final, hears the devastating news that his sister has perished in a car accident. Dedicating the contest to her memory he paddles out and thrashes the competition with a near suicidal attack that includes the legendary “snap heard around the world” - a radical under the lip re-entry performed on a giant wave. This maneuver has not been equaled at Pipe to this day.

December 1992
The great Kelly Slater wins his first of what would become five Pipeline Masters titles and six world championship titles. Will he add to his total this year?

December 1993
In a year that would see proud Hawaiian Sunny Garcia crowned as world champ, Derek Ho would take the inspiration and win the Pipeline Masters seven years after his first win in 1986.

December 1994
Kelly Slater continues his domination and wins another Masters title.
